SOUTH HAVEN — The Dowagiac girls tennis team opened its season with a Wolverine Conference road victory against South Haven Tuesday.

The Chieftains blanked the Rams 8-0, marking the first sweep for Dowagiac under the direction of coach Andi Smallbone, who is beginning her third season with the team.

“Fun and exciting for the girls to have such huge wins out if the gate, but I asked them to not celebrate too big until we got on the bus,” said Smallbone. “We have been in that same situation before with the roles and the scores reversed. It is nice to remain a bit humble for the opponent.

“We’ve all been there before,” but once we got on the bus we let it all go. Even our driver Lori, was celebrating for us on the bus speaker.”

Dowagiac never dropped more than four games at any one flight in completely dominating South Haven.

Ally Hale blanked Jordan Harris at No. 4 singles 6-0 and 6-0, while Hailee Green and Mackenzie Brooks also posted a shutout with a 6-0 and 6-0 win over Jasmine Milehara and Juana Morrison.

Dowagiac will return to action following spring break by hosting Buchanan in a non-conference match April 12.
