Chieftains split with Coloma in season opener

The Dowagiac baseball team split with visiting Coloma in its season opener at Rotary Park Tuesday.

Calvin Starnes tossed a one-hitter for the Comets as they took the opener 4-0.

Starnes struck out 12 and walked three for Coloma.

The Comets used a three-run third inning to break open the scoreless contest. Coloma added a run in the fifth.

The Comets finished with four hits, all singles.

Dowagiac’s lone hit came off the bat Collin Hassle.

Brenden Dudley started for the Chieftains and took the loss. Dudley allowed two earned runs on one hit with five walks in two innings of work.

Nick Foote pitched the next four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Adrien Bucha-Moore worked the seventh, walking one.

Dowagiac rallied for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap, which lasted just six innings due to darkness.

Coloma (1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the fifth only to have the Chieftains (1-1) rally for two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Mack Charles picked up the victory as he went the distance, allowing 1 uneared run on six hits with three strikeouts.

Matthew Kelley took the loss for the Comets despite allowing just four hits and striking out six.

Foote, Dudley, Austin Jones and Kade Schriber all singled for the Chieftains.

Ethan Price had a double for Coloma.
