Man charged with murdering father in Mason Township

An Elkhart man suspected of fatally stabbing his father during a fight Monday night in Mason Township is facing murder charges, according to information from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office and Michigan State Police.

Joseph Craigo, 32, was charged with open murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon and interference with electronic communications during his arraignment in Cass County court Tuesday. Craigo is being held without bond.

According to police, Craigo was arrested Monday night after authorities responded to a reported stabbing at a residence in the 16000 block of State Line Road in Mason Township outside Union around 8:22 p.m. Upon arrival, police discovered that one of the residents of the home and the suspect’s father, 59-year-old Alan Craigo, had been stabbed to death, with several wounds located on his body.

Police suspect that Joseph Craigo attacked his father with a knife after an argument between the two became violent that evening. Craigo visited the residence, where he once lived, to pick up a few belongings before the fight occurred.

Craigo is scheduled to appear again in court Thursday, April 6.

State troopers were assisted at the scene by officers with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and Cass County K-9 Unit, and crews with SEPSA-Porter Fire and EMS.
