Brandywine wins pair at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME — The Brandywine baseball team swept River Valley and Lake Michigan Catholic in its season opener at the University of Notre Dame Monday.

The Bobcats (2-0) defeated the Mustangs 13-3 in six innings and edged the Lakers 6-3 in the nightcap.

Brandywine used a seven-run fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie with River Valley in the first game.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Brady Duval singled to score a pair of runs for the Bobcats, while Joey Covyeou picked up two RBIs one out later to increase the Brandywine lead to 5-1.

Max Douglass capped the scoring with an RBI single.

The Bobcats finished with 12 hits in the game, including a double by Duval, who was 2-for-2.

Douglass was also 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Covyeou worked the first five innings to pick up the victory. He allowed two hits and struck out eight.

Kaci Lintz worked the sixth, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

In the nightcap, Brandywine built up a 6-1 lead on Lake Michigan Catholic through six innings.

The Lakers scored a pair of runs in the sixth, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Toby Fox picked up the victory as he allowed one earned run on three hits with 10 strikeouts. Duval pitched the seventh to pick up the save.

Fox and Covyeou both doubled for Brandywine, which also got a home run from Duval. JeRod Glenn added a pair of hits.

Brandywine plays host to Niles in non-league action beginning at 4 p.m. today.
