Three Rivers edges Niles in nine innings

THREE RIVERS — Niles varsity baseball team fell to Three Rivers 6-5 on Friday on the final play of the game.

The game was tied at five with Three Rivers batting in the bottom of the ninth when Jalen Heivilin singled off of Bryce Lake, driving in the winning run.

The Vikings lost despite out-hitting the Wildcats 7-6.

Three Rivers (1-0) took an early lead in the first inning. An error scored two runs for the Wildcats.

Niles knotted the game up at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Dawson Clemens drove in two runs when he singled.

The Vikings scored three runs in the third inning. Niles scored on a single by Drew Huffman, a groundout by Jakob Huffman and a stolen base.

Heivilin earned the win for Three Rivers. He threw one inning, allowing no runs, no hits and walking one.

Lake took the loss for the Vikings. He pitched 1.3 innings, allowing one run, two hits, striking out one and walking one.

Alex Minger started the game for Three Rivers. He tossed two innings, giving up no runs, one hit, striking out two and walking one.

Huffman started the game for Niles. He went three innings, surrendering three runs, two hits and striking out one.

Niles had seven hits in the game. Huffman, Lake and Keegan Neumann each collected multiple hits for the Vikings. Lake led Niles with three of Niles’ 10 stolen bases.
