Notre Dame loses Turner for rest of the season

If Notre Dame is going to advance to the Final Four in Dallas, it will have to do so without junior All-American Brianna Turner.

Turner suffered a knee injury in the first half of the Fighting Irish’s win over No. 9-seed Purdue Sunday.

It was revealed Tuesday morning that Turner would miss the remainder of the season due to tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Turner led Notre Dame in scoring at 15.3 points per game average and 7.1 rebounds per game. She is No. 8 nationally in field goal percentage (.619).

Turner has 86 blocks, which is sixth best in a single season for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (32-3) advanced to the “Sweet 16” for the 15th time in school history and the eighth year in a row after holding off an upset bid by the Boilermakers Sunday night.

The No. 1-seeded Fighting Irish slipped past Purdue 88-82 in overtime and will now face No. 5-seed Ohio State at 7 p.m. Friday night at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Buckeyes (28-6) advanced to the regional semifinals with a 82-68 victory over Kentucky Sunday.

Notre Dame did get some good news Sunday as Kathryn Westbeld returned to the line up after missing the first round game with an injury.

Westbeld is averaging 8.4 points per game and 5.1 rebounds.

The Fighting Irish will have to lean on Lindsay Allen (9.4 points, 7.6 assts.), Arike Ogunbowale (15.2 points, 4.6 rebounds) and Marina Mabrey (14.5 points).

Ohio State is led by guard Kelsey Mitchell, who is averaging 22.7 points paer game, 2.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Inside, the Buckeyes are led by forward Shayla Cooper, who is averaging 10.5 points and 6.6 rebounds.

The winner will face either Texas or Stanford in the regional finals, which will be played at Rupp Arena at noon Sunday.
