A Dowagiac man was hospitalized after his vehicle rolled over while he tried to prevent a collision with another driver outside the city Sunday night, according to release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, the crash occurred at 9:51 p.m. on Rudy Road near Gage Street in Wayne Township.

The accident happened when 34-year-old Lucas Black, of Dowagiac, was driving south on Rudy when a vehicle heading north attempted to pass a vehicle, and headed toward Black’s vehicle in the southbound lane. Black swerved to avoid the other vehicle and lost control of his own vehicle, rolling several times.

Black was transported to Borgess Lee Hospital in Dowagiac by Pride Care Ambulance.

Airbags were not deployed in the crash, though Black was wearing a seatbelt. Drugs and alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Cass County deputies were assisted by officers with the Dowagiac Police Department and Pokagon Tribal Police Department, as well as by crews with the Wayne Township Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance.
