Tuesday power outages cause minor sewage spill in Cassopolis

CASSOPOLIS — The Cassopolis Area Utility Authority reported a small sewer spill during Tuesday night’s power outages. Cassopolis public works crews worked through the night hauling generators from station to station to keep sewer water moving to the treatment plant.

When the weather and work load piled up, the station, located near the east end of Maple Street, overflowed 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of sewage onto the ground before crews could make it to the station and begin pumping it down with a temporary bypass pump.

The large amounts of rain kept most stations from keeping up with the volume of water moving though the system.

Alarms at the station will be adjusted to call workers sooner than normal to keep spills like this from happening in the future, village officials said.
