Athlete Showcase: Edwardsburg’s Alexa Markel

Alexa Markel is a junior on the Edwardsburg girls basketball team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

AM: One of my greatest accomplishments as an athlete was breaking the school record for the 800-meter relay this past track year.

 

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

AM: Losing the first round of regionals last year.

 

What has been a hardship in your life?

AM: A hardship in my life has been trying to overcome my many health problems.

 

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

AM: A hero in my life is my dad, for the way he aspires to be a leader and wants the best for everyone.

 

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

AM: I am most nervous while competing in a big championship game as well as in overtime.

 

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

AM: An embarrassing athletic moment is airballing a wide-open three.

 

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

AM: I work out/train by myself by getting in the gym to shoot on free days and staying after practice.

 

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

AM: I would like to compete in powerlifting in the winter season, as well as soccer in the spring.

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

AM: Sports are an important part of high school because they give you something to remember and challenge you as a student and athlete. You create memories with your team and become a family.

 

How would you give away $50,000?

AM: I would give $50,000 to cure cancer.

 

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

AM: I would be the head coach of a varsity girls basketball team because that is what I enjoy most.

 

If I did not play sports, I would…?

AM: Spend more time focusing on school and spend that free time with friends.

 

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

AM: The most challenging thing for me to do in basketball is be a confident shooter.

 

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

AM: If I could change one rule it would be that you can have more than three seconds in the paint.

 

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

AM: The best compliment I have received is I am very hard-working and determined.

 

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

AM: One of the scariest things I have had to do was sit in a hospital for three days because of my kidneys. It took me out of sports for a couple of weeks and made me realize I need to cherish all of it.

 

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

AM: Anything and everything my teammate Kaitlyn (Zarycki) does impresses me.

 

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

AM: My favorite hobby is sports, because it gets my mind off other things and allows me to make memories.
