Playing back-to-back games did not seem to have any affect on the Dowagiac boys basketball team this past weekend.

The Chieftains handed visiting Three Rivers its first Wolverine Conference South Division loss as they defeated the Wildcats 69-56 Friday night and then turned around and, less than 24 hours later, knocked off Lakeshore 52-31 to improve to 7-10 on the year.

Dowagiac (7-10, 3-5 South) took control of the game Friday night against the Wildcats (11-5, 6-1 South) in the second quarter.

Leading 14-12, the Chieftains exploded for 20 points, led by eight points from Shaquan Stanback and six points from J.J. Smith.

Three Rivers was unable to make much headway cutting into the Chieftains’ lead in the second half and trailed 48-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dowagiac caught fire again, this time scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter, led by Smith’s 10 points, and pulled away to the double digit victory.

“The guys came out and played well tonight,” said Dowagiac coach Danum Hunt. “There were some times when we were inconsistent, but they put together a pretty good win tonight.

The Chieftains steadily pulled away from the Lancers Saturday afternoon.

After grabbing a 10-6 first quarter lead, Dowagiac upped its advantage to 15 points by halftime (26-11) and then outscored Lakeshore 26-20 in the second half to earn the easy victory.
