It may be déjà vu all over again at Brandywine.

If the Brandywine Board of Education approves the recommendation of its athletic direct Vance Stratton Feb. 28, Jim Myers will return to the helm of the Bobcats’ softball program.

Myers coached Brandywine for 17 years, posting a record of 401-148 along the way. He retired in 2008.

His teams won nine conference championships, eighth district championships and three regional titles.

Myer will be replacing Ron Hartline, who coached Brandywine for two seasons, winning a district championship in 2014 and going 17-18 last season.

Myers said he threw his hat in the ring because it was time to get back into coaching softball.

“I think I would like to coach the girls again,” he said. “I felt like I wanted to get back into it. I have played a lot of softball and coached a lot of softball. I kind of missed the game day stuff.”

While Myers said he saw several games each year, he does not know a lot about last year’s team or the players who may be returning this season.

“I want to let everybody show me that they deserve to play,” he said. “We are going to stress defense and obviously we hope we can find a couple of pitchers.”

Myers understands that the game has changed a bit as well as the conference the Bobcats now play in.

“The pitching rubber is three-feet farther back so there will be some adjustment,” Myers said. “So it is kind of like when I first started. I will have to learn along the way.”

Being that the schedule for the 2017 season is already set, Myers and his staff will be looking at it and making adjustments for the coming years.

“We will see how it works and see what we need to change,” he said. “We are not in a lot of tournaments this year, but next year we are going to get into tournaments every weekend.”

While some aspects of the game have changed in the nine years since he last coached, his philosophy and coaching style have not.

“I still have been coaching football over at Cass so I have not changed,” Myers said. “We are going to work hard. We are going to put in our time and work on techniques and fundamentals. That is what it takes to be successful.”

Myer, who was a teacher at Brandywine for 38 years, also coached football and volleyball for the Bobcats.

He was inducted into the football hall of fame in 2013.
