Buchanan wins a close game against Niles

Monday night’s meeting between Niles and Buchanan provided a glimpse into how the 2016-2017 season has gone for both squads.

The host Bucks came into the contest 13-2 and has won a number of close games.

The Vikings entered the game 4-12 and has lost seven games by five points or less.

Niles had every opportunity to upset Buchanan, but a late surge by the Bucks left the Vikings on the wrong end of a 47-43 non-conference decision.

Trailing 17-13 after one quarter, the Vikings outscored the Bucks 14-9 to grab a 27-26 halftime lead.

The two teams continued to go back and forth throughout the second half with Buchanan taking a 33-32 lead into the final quarter.

Niles’ Alycia Patterson tied the game at 43-43 with 1:50 remaining only to have Buchanan score the game’s final four points.

Jayla Bibbs scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bucks, who also got 15 points from Brooke Wesner.

Jaycee Myer and Emily Gains both had 12 points for the Vikings.

Edwardsburg at Three Rivers

THREE RIVERS — The Edwardsburg girls basketball team clinched the Wolverine Conference South Division championship with a 54-50 win over host Three Rivers Monday night.

The Eddies rallied from a 23-15 halftime deficit to take a 37-32 lead into the final quarter.

Edwardsburg was able to hold off a final quarter challenge by the Wildcats to improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the South Division.

Savannah Dixon led all scorers with 19 points. Edwardsburg also got 12 points from Noelle Kraus and 11 points from Kaitlyn Zarycki.

Arianna Fowles led Three Rivers (6-11, 3-4 South) with 18 points.

Dream Academy at Cassopolis

The Cassopolis boys basketball team edged visiting Benton Harbor Dream Academy 71-67 Monday night.

The Rangers (12-3) led 12-8 after one quarter, but trailed Dream Academy 39-27 at halftime before cutting the lead to 56-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

Cassopolis outscored Dream Academy 22-11 in the final eight minutes to rally for the victory.

Kiambu Gary scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Rangers, who also got 15 points from Tyrese Hunt-Thompson, 14 points from Davonte Goins and 13 points from Xander Smith.

Dream Academy’s Faendrice Burdle led all scorers with 25 points.
