UConn bad for women’s basketball

While winning 100 consecutive games is interesting on its face value, I would say Connecticut is bad for women’s college basketball.

There are several reasons why I feel this way.

First, the Huskies’ domination of women’s college basketball gets a bit boring for me after a while.

In high school, when teams are dominant the prevailing feeling is that everyone else just needs to work harder to get better.

In college, coaches can go out and recruit better talent and work harder to get better. In this case, it really does not matter how hard they recruit and how hard they work.

No one can beat the Huskies.

Notre Dame, Stanford and Baylor have been among the schools who have all taken their shots at Connecticut and had limited success.

Tennessee, under the direction of the late Pat Summitt, was the only real challenger when it came to winning national championships.

My second reason is, that when it comes to the post season, everyone knows the Huskies are going to win it all.

That means, unless you really love Connecticut or college women’s basketball, you are going to watch the NCAA Tournament next month.

The casual fan will have little interest in the women’s tournament because the outcome has pretty much already been decided.

So instead of drawing more fans to what is truly an exceptional sport to watch, most of them are going to keep watching the men’s tournament, which features tons of upsets and where the winner could be anyone of a handful of programs.

I love women’s college basketball in general, but unless someone can figure out how to level the playing field my attention will continually be averted to the men’s game.

As for the Huskies and their historic run?

Congratulations. You have earned it.
