The Dowagiac wrestling team’s bid for the Division 3 team district championship came up short against Constantine Thursday.

The Chieftains had several chances to pull out the victory against the Falcons, but fell 39-33.

Constantine reached the championship match with a 46-27 win over Buchanan in the semifinals.

With the match tied at 30-30 and four bouts remaining, it appeared the Chieftains were in prime position to pull out the victory.

But a pin of Dowagiac’s Tyler Huston at 103 gave the Falcons the lead for good.

Both teams forfeited at 112 setting up three of Dowagiac’s top wrestlers — Kody Walker (119), Jessie Edge (125) and Gage Williams (130) — to finish the match.

Walker gave up a defensive pin to Noah Harrison in the first period before Edge defeated Jaxom Elwine 4-2 to make it 36-33 heading into the final bout of the night.

Williams lost a controversial 3-2 decision to Zach Harrison, giving up a reversal as time expired.

“I didn’t see there was a whole lot of control,” said Dowagiac head coach Colin Burandt of the takedown. “Kody giving up a defensive pin, you could not foresee that one coming. Then on top of that we gave up six total pins. If we cut those in half we are on the opposite side of it.

“It is part of wrestling. We have to stay off our backs and we did not do a very good job of that.”

On Saturday, Dowagiac advanced three wrestlers out of the Division 3 individual district held at Constantine.

Walker was the district champion at 112 pounds as he won by injury default.

Also advancing to the regional at Delton-Kellogg were Justin Lyle (16) and Donovan Schoff (171).

Buchanan also advanced three wrestlers as Adam Eger (135), Jacob Graham (160) and Matt Dehring (215) moved on.
