Chieftains hold on for third straight win

VICKSBURG — Visiting Dowagiac withstood a pair of shots in the final eight seconds to pick up its third straight victory.

The Chieftains defeated Vicksburg 72-71 in a Wolverine Conference boys basketball game.

The Chieftains had a one-point lead following a basket by Adrien Bucha-Moore when the Bulldogs had a pair of chances to pullout the victory.

The game was close throughout as Dowagiac led 20-18 after one quarter and 36-35 at halftime.

The two teams were deadlocked at 55-55 heading into the fourth quarter.

Jamin Hunt led the Chieftains with 20 points, while Bucha-Moore added 18 and J.J. Smith 10.

Deondre Lovell scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Bulldogs. Blake Rankin added 19.

A slow start cost the Dowagiac girls basketball team in the first game of the Wolverine Conference South Division doubleheader.

The Chieftains trailed 15-2 after one quarter and could not overcome the early deficit in a 43-30 loss to Vicksburg.

The Bulldogs led 20-7 at halftime.

Both teams scored 23 points in the second half.

Dowagiac was led by Amiyah Smith’s 16 points.

Tania Wilson finished with seven points.

Vicksburg was led by Layna Steele’s game-high 19 points.
