Two different games at two different sites came down to one quarter in both instances.
The Dowagiac boys basketball team outscored visiting Allegan 21-1 in the second quarter of its 77-34 Wolverine Conference non-divisional game Tuesday night.
Meanwhile in Allegan, the visiting Chieftains were outscored 21-0 in the second quarter as the Tigers rolled to a 52-25 victory.
Despite a sluggish start, Dowagiac was able to overcome an early 16-7 deficit by turning up the defensive pressure on Allegan in the boys game.
The Chieftains (4-10) played their best defensive game of the year according to coach Danum Hunt.
Using its speed advantage, Dowagiac was able to force multiple turnovers by Allegan, which led to easy baskets.
Dowagiac turned the early seven-point deficit into a 30-17 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Chieftains poured in 23 third quarter points as the lead grew to 53-25.
“Defensively, the guys did a great job tonight,” he said. “They made good rotations. They switched well on the screens and that is probably the most solid we have been on defense this entire year.”
Adrien Bucha-Moore led a well-balanced attack with 13 points, while Jamin Hunt added 12. Dowagiac also got 10 points each from D.J. Lanier and J.J. Smith.
Landon Mielke had 10 points to pace the Tigers.
In the girls game, the Chieftains played well in the first quarter and trailed just 11-7.
However, Dowagiac could not find the basket in the second quarter and the Tigers took advantage of it to build a 32-7 halftime advantage.
The Chieftains (3-12) were only outscored 20-18 in the second half.
Taylor Hulett led Dowagiac with 12 points. She was one of just three players to score in the contest for the Chieftains. Amiyah Smith added nine.
