Those hunting to get the most bang for their buck will soon have another option to choose from with the construction of a new Dollar General at 2561 Detroit Road in Niles.
Construction started on Dec. 1, and the 9,100 square foot store is expected to be completed in early summer, said Crystal Ghassemi, corporate communications representative.
A grand opening ceremony will take place when the store opens and will be announced when there is a final opening date.
The Dollar General company is aiming to open 1,000 new stores in Michigan, creating 420 news jobs throughout the state in 2017. The construction is part of the store’s new growth plan, a news release said.
The new Niles location will employ between six to 10 people, with three of those jobs being full-time, Ghassemi said. Those interested in applying for a job may do so online at dollargeneral.com/careers. The corporation will post job openings for the new store in the next four to six weeks.
There are currently five other Dollar General stores in Cass County. In Niles there is one Dollar General located in the Riverfront Square along Main Street.
Ghassemi said the location for the new store was chosen because of its proximity to traffic and its convenient location in regards to area residents.
“We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration,” Ghassemi said.
The store will offer health and beauty products, as well as housewares, stationery, seasonal items, basic clothing, packaged food, refrigerated food and frozen food.
“Dollar General gives its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise as part of its mission of serving others,” Ghassemi said.
She touted the hypermarket chain’s Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which every year awards grants to schools, nonprofits and libraries within a 20-miles radius of the store’s or distribution center’s location.
The literacy program was implemented in 1993 and has since given out $127 million to nonprofits, according to Ghassemi.
Customers may also receive advice on resources that can help them learn how to read, speak English or earn a high school equivalency by picking up a pre-paid postage reply card at every cash register.
