Niles man dies in Howard Township crash

A Niles man died Wednesday evening after losing control of his vehicle while attempting to pass another driver in Howard Township, according to a release from the Michigan State Police.
Chad Pond, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene of accident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Barron Lake Road near Cook Street in the township.
According to police, Pond was driving south on Barron Lake at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass another vehicle. While passing the other vehicle, Pond’s vehicle clipped into the other automobile, causing him to lose control.
As a result, Pond’s vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned. The deceased was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Police do not know if alcohol played a role in the accident.
Officers are continuing to investigate the crash.
