Athlete Showcase: Emma Applegate

Emma Applegate is a senior on the Niles girls basketball team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

EA: Beating a 3-point Indiana state record.

 

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

EA: Losing at semi-state to the team that won state.

 

What has been a hardship in your life?

EA: Overcoming two ACL surgeries.

 

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

EA: My dad, because he taught me to work hard and has always been there for me during the hard times.

 

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

EA: When I need to hit a big shot coming out of a timeout.

 

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

EA: I think falling at half court in a regional game when no one was around was definitely one to remember.

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

EA: I run and do a lot of knee exercises.

 

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

EA: Soccer.

 

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

EA: They are a good way to exercise and a great way to talk to friends.

 

How would you give away $50,000?

EA: I would give it to the foster care system in America.

 

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

EA: Girls basketball.

 

If I did not play sports, I would…?

EA: I would play a musical instrument because those people are so talented. However, I do not think I could ever be that talented, but I can dream.

 

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

EA: I struggle mentally to drive to the basket because I tore my ACL the first time doing this.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

EA: I would like to have shot clocks in high school games because it speeds up the game and makes it more fun.

 

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

EA: “You are one of the best shooters I have seen.”

 

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

EA: I went parasailing and I do not like heights, but I a glad I did it because the view was amazing.

 

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

EA: In Florida, I saw someone surf and I was really impressed that they did not fall and die.

 

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

EA: Playing with my little neighbors, because they are so cute and fun to be around and they are practically family.
