A big second quarter helped visiting Dowagiac win its third game of the season Tuesday night.

The Chieftains outscored the Bees 19-3 in the second quarter to open up a 27-11 halftime lead en route to an easy 51-26 non-conference victory.

It was the third straight year the Chieftains have defeated Bridgman.

“We were able to knock down some shots and we cranked up our defense and forced turnovers,” said Dowagiac coach Brent Nate about the second quarter surge.”

At the offensive end, Kellyn Daly scored all 11 of her points in the second quarter on a trio of 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

Dowagiac (3-11) has struggled with offensive consistency this season, but came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

The Chieftains outscored Bridgman 15-8 in the third quarter to open up a 42-19 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.

“That is one of the things we talked about,” Nate said. “We needed to play a complete game. We kept up the intensity in the second half.”

Besides Daly’s total, Dowagiac also got 10 points from Amiyah Smith and nine points from Tania Wilson.

Lauren Keller led all scorers as she tossed in 15 points for the Bees.

The Chieftains return to Wolverine Conference South Division action Friday night as they host Edwardsburg.

Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
