After a brief chase in Buchanan Township, Michigan State Police arrested a person they believe stole a pick-up truck in Three Oaks.
At 3:10 p.m. Monday, a state trooper tried to pull over a GMC pick-up truck for a speeding violation on U.S. 12 near Gardner Road in Buchanan Township.
The pick-up accelerated and turned into a field to try to lose the trooper. The trooper kept visual contact with the pick-up and called for assistance. The vehicle then turned eastbound onto a service road along the railroad tracks.
During the chase, the trooper learned the vehicle was recently reported stolen from Three Oaks. The driver of the pick-up managed to return to the road and headed north on Red Bud Trail. Just north of Buchanan, the driver turned west down a dead end road and ditched the pick-up behind a home.
As officers converged on the scene, a perimeter was established to try to capture the suspect. Law enforcement on scene followed footprints heading south along the St. Joseph River, where officers at one of the perimeter points by the river ultimately captured the suspect.
The suspect was sent to the Berrien County jail. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, the Buchanan Police Department, the Berrien Springs/Oronoko Police Department, the Galien Police Department and the Amtrack Railroad Police Department assisted the Michigan State Police in the chase.
