An Edwardsburg woman died Saturday after running her vehicle off the roadway while being pursued by police outside Niles, according to a release from the Michigan State Police.
The driver, 30-year-old Amanda Fay Bowers, was pronounced dead at the scene after she was ejected from her vehicle.
The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m., when a deputy from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office attempted to speak to Bowers, who had stopped her vehicle in the travel lane of the roadway with the headlights off. When the officer approached the vehicle, Bowers sped her vehicle around the parked patrol car and fled the scene.
The deputy pursued the driver for approximately 3 miles, before the Edwardsburg woman’s car ran off the roadway near Old M-205 and Redfield Street in Mason Township. The car rolled several times, and she was ejected from the vehicle due to the fact she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.
The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
Troopers with Michigan State Police were assisted on scene by members of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Edwardsburg/Ontwa Police Department, and the Porter Township Fire and Ambulance.
