What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners that want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any programs and all programs are free. Tuesday, Jan. 31
• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Special
Edition with guest Sofia the First
Michiana Princess will present Sofia the First at Special Edition. All ages are welcome, but Special Edition is designed to be particularly accessible to adults with special needs.
• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals
Each Tuesday, the library hosts a special storytime tour of the world. There will be books, songs, a craft and other super surprises relating to the special country of the month.
• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters
Chips and Chapters is a read-aloud storytime. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara reads aloud from a chapter book while guests eat chips and follow along. This opportunity is open to all ages.

Wednesday, Feb. 1
• Multiple times — Storytime day
Squealers (birth to 18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months to 3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3 to 5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
• 10 a.m. to noon — Special Edition Craft Day
This week, guests will make valentine cards to share. Special Edition is a weekly series of programs designed to be particularly accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs.
• 1 to 4 p.m. — Michigan Works! Talent Development Specialists
Michigan Works! is now visiting Niles District Library. Every other Wednesday afternoon, staff from their offices in Dowagiac and Benton Harbor will visit the library to assist job seekers. Talent Development Specialists can help people register for unemployment, evaluate strengths and skills, create or update resumes, sharpen interview skills and more. Thursday, Feb. 2
• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)
This program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened, or for referrals and information. Representatives will visit the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Thursday. For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.

Storytime
• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong
Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play. Other board games are also available.
• 4:30 to 7 p.m. — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
People who made less than $54,000 in 2016 and need assistance in preparing a basic tax return can schedule a VITA appointment by calling United Way at 2-1-1 or (800) 310-5454. Volunteers will be at Niles District Library every Thursday evening during tax season.
• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time
Teens are invited to hang out from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evenings. The library has games, snacks, books and a place to study here in the teen department.

Friday, Feb. 3
• 1 to 3 p.m. — Learn to knit
Materials will be provided for people to create their own knitted washcloth. This is week one of a two-week workshop. Participants are welcome to attend one or both sessions. Call (269) 683-8545, ext. 112 to register.
• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches
Patrons may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on their own yarn or sewing project. Rookies are welcome; a teacher and a few loaner tools will help them get started.

Saturday, Feb. 4
• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess club
Love to play chess? This group meets twice monthly to play on the first and third Saturdays. All ages and abilities are welcome. Don’t know how to play? Teachers are available to show newbies the ropes. This group of all ages meets in the children’s department.
• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the library
People are invited to take the time to do something great for themselves while reaping the health and relaxation benefits of yoga. This free class is for all abilities and offers a great starting point for people who have never tried yoga. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and some water. The library has a limited amount of mats available to borrow.
• 10:30 a.m. — Treeclimbers
Genealogy Group
Most genealogists find the most valuable research tool is other genealogists. Genealogists are invited to share their findings and support others in their own family quest. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience. Treeclimbers meets the first Saturday of each month.
• Noon to 3 p.m. — Berrien County Treasurer Tax Talk
Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski will be at the library to help answer questions about personal property taxes in Berrien County.
• 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Family Nerf Night
Think you’re a crack shot? Come find out! Grab your Nerf gear and bring it to this after hours event. Participants will have full run of the main floor of the library to compete in a series of team and free-for-all Nerf activities. Participants must bring their own gear to participate. This event is open to all ages, but participants under 12 must have a parent/guardian present in order to attend. A waiver must be signed at the event by either the participant or their parent/guardian and eye protection is encouraged.
