The Central Cass Fire Department officially moved into its new station Tuesday night.

The department broke ground in early October with the goal of moving into the new station by the end of the year.

Members of the fire board met Tuesday at the new station and were on hand when the fire vehicles made the move from the old station across from the historic Cass County Courthouse to the new facility on Michigan 60, just outside the village limits.

Cassopolis Fire Chief Jeff Locke was excited to be moving into the new station.

“It is has been a long time coming, but I am very happy with what we have now,” he said. “There is more than enough room for the trucks and everything. The meeting room is a little crowded, but it will work just fine.”

170126cassfirestation2Locke said the advantage of having a new building outside the additional space is its efficiency.

“We will have better heating and cooling and the maintenance will be so much easier,” he said. “The old building was so old it seemed like there was always something breaking.”

The department owns 11 acres in total at its new station.

Locke said in the future he would like to have a tower built so that he and other departments can use the space for training purposes.
