Correction: A previous version of this article used the former last name of the volunteer. She has since remarried and changed her surname.

Rennie Witham, of Dowagiac, is a substitute teacher who volunteers with the Cass County Parks Department and as a local 4-H club leader.

Have long have volunteered with the parks department?

For a few years now, maybe four years or so.

How did you get involved?

Rennie Towne

I grew up in 4-H, so my mom works at the [MSU] Extension office. That is my connection with Scott [Wyman, parks director]. I have always helped out. I was on the parks board for a while.

What kind of things do you help out with?

I love working with kids. Harvest Fest is always really fun, along with Discover Winter Nights. Anything that allows me to interact with the youth. I will be working on some bird programs whenever we get a chance to host our Winter Nights. And of course, how could I forget about the Easter Eggstravaganza?

Do you feel your career as a teacher dovetails nicely into working with children at these events?

Yeah. I am also a 4-H leader. That is what inspired me to get into education, working with the youth in the dress horse program.

What is the thing you like most about volunteering with the parks?

I like being able to work with the kids, but I also love nature, so it is nice to be out in that setting as well.

You mentioned you are a 4-H leader. What club do you lead?

Drafted! 4-H. I was the founder and starter of that club. I am currently the key leader but I plan on handing the reins over very soon. I will still remain a leader, though.

When did you start it?

It has been about eight years, if not longer. I have been a leader for about 20 years. I became a co-key leader as soon as I was done in my 4-H in the club I grew up in. I was one of the youngest leaders to take over a club.

Is there anything else you volunteer with, besides the parks and 4-H?

No. Those two things keep me pretty busy.

Is there anything you want to say to encourage others to volunteer with the parks department?

Being able to give back to the community is a very important role anybody can play, and it encourages our youth to do the same. Helping out and preserving our parks is also very important.
