The board of education is the backbone of any school system — its members help set the policy that guides the district.
As such, Niles Community Schools congratulates its board members who have recently been sworn in: Dana Daniels, Mark Weber and Mark Wortham, as they embark on a journey to serve the children and community of Niles.
“Our school board members make a tremendous commitment when they accept the role to serve,” said Dan Applegate, superintendent of Niles Community Schools. “I would like to take this time to honor all of our members who selflessly devote countless hours to ensuring student success. I would also like to recognize and congratulate the members who we will swear in this month, as well as thank Jeff Curry, our previous treasurer, for providing invaluable guidance and counsel based on his professional expertise.”
Daniels has been a staple member of the board, and was originally elected in June of 2003. He utilizes his experience and insight to guide new members through processes and ran for re-election to keep the board focused on the future of the school system.
He is a graduate of Niles High School, and is a lifelong resident of Niles.
Wortham previously served a four-year term on the board from 2010 through 2014. He is an active member of the community and, as such, chose to run for re-election to ensure that all children have access to a high quality education and the tools necessary to achieve their fullest potential.
Weber is CEO of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA.
He feels a deep commitment to helping the youth within the community by utilizing his business background to support the board’s efforts for Niles.
Weber was appointed in 2016 to fill Jon Martin’s role and, because of his dedication to the schools, was elected to a six-year term that was left vacant by Jeff Curry’s resignation in November.
In addition to celebrating its board members for their dedication to the Niles community, school officials are recognizing Curry for his service to the district. In November, Curry resigned his position to accept a board position with Lake Michigan College.
