For the past nine years, Dowagiac VFW Post 1855 has helped sponsor the
Shop with a Cop/Hero program shortly before Christmas.
With support from the Dowagiac Shopko store, the Dowagiac Elks Lodge, Deerpath Recyclers, local police and other donors, administrators with Dowagiac Union Schools were able to provide 10 deserving children with the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for their families. The children selected must have good grades and attendance in school.
After shopping with police, firemen and VFW members, gifts were wrapped by Santa’s helpers. Children were driven in police and fire vehicles to the VFW Post where they enjoy pizza, cookies and games with public safety officials, until they were picked up by their parents.
This program has proven to be a beneficial program for our community. Thanks to all for the support of this worthwhile project.
