LMC to host MLK Day events

BENTON HARBOR — Lake Michigan College invites the public to participate in a series of free events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Breakfast celebration and awards ceremony
On Monday, Jan. 16, LMC will host its 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast celebration and awards ceremony at The Mendel Center.
Breakfast begins at 7:45 a.m. with a ceremony running from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
The college will announce the recipient of its 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award.
Speakers include Congressman Fred Upton and Diversity Consultant Danny Sledge. Rolando Hernandez, of Eau Claire, and Lionel Kanyowa, of the United Kingdom, will present award-winning student essays.
All God’s Children Community Choir and the LMC Concert Choir will perform musical selections.
Guests are invited to bring donated hygiene and toiletry items for the Emergency Shelter, Child and Family Services — Safe Shelter for Domestic Violence and Salvation Army’s Men’s Shelter. A list of accepted items may be found at volunteerswmi.org.

Race relations forum at LMC-Benton Harbor
A race relations forum on “Promoting Racial Equality in Education” will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Brown Lecture Hall.
This forum will address strategies for promoting racial equality in education. The first hour will be devoted to presentations by panelists: Jeffrey Booker, Larry Feldman, Rebecca Fudge and Gladys Peeples-Burks.
The second hour will be devoted to questions and discussion between panel members and attendees.
