A teenage driver was cited after striking the side of a Dowagiac school bus Monday afternoon, according to a release from the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers with the department were sent at about 3:40 p.m. to a reported traffic crash at the intersection of Orchard and North streets in the city, according to police. Upon arriving, police learned that a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix crashed into the side of a school bus while driving east on North Street.

The 17-year-old driver of the car told police she did not see the school bus, which was driving south on Orchard. Although she slammed on the brakes when she saw the bus, she was unable to avoid a collision.

At the time of the crash, the driver and a 5-year-old passenger were inside. Neither was hurt, but an ambulance was called to check on their condition, per the policy of Dowagiac Union Schools. The child went home with parents following the crash. The teenage driver was also not hurt in the accident.

Officers cited the driver of the Grand Prix for failing to yield.
