A man who led authorities on a chase from Elkhart to Cass County was brought into custody by deputies with the sheriff’s office early Wednesday, according to a release from the department.

According to police, officers with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to help deputies with Elkhart County during their pursuit of a man who had fled authorities in Elkhart. Cass County officers joined the chase near Calvin Center Road and Williamsville Street outside Cassopolis, tailing the suspect’s vehicle until the man drove into a cornfield near the intersection of Birch Road and Teasdale Lake Street.

At that point, the driver abandoned his vehicle and began fleeing on foot. The Sheriff Office’s K-9, Faust, was sent to chase down the man, with the suspect surrendering to the dog’s handler, who took him into custody.

The suspect was lodged at Cass County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding and operating without a license. The suspect’s passenger, a 29-year-old South Bend man, was detained at the scene and released, with no pending charges at this time.

The names of both individuals are being withheld by authorities, pending arraignment.

Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and Bristol Police Department.

This case is still under further investigation.
