Meth lab found in Niles Township, two arrested

Two Niles residents were arrested after the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department discovered a meth lab at a residence in the 1900 block of S. 13th St. in Niles Township Tuesday night.

Joshua George Gillette, 36, and Megan Leigh Brewer, 32, were arrested on preliminary charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine within 500 feet of a residence, possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, transporting hazardous waste and maintaining a drug house, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

The arrests occurred following an investigation by the Berrien County Narcotics Unit on a location known for drug manufacturing and drug transactions.

Narcotics officers were conducting surveillance on the location and observed a vehicle leave. Niles Township Sheriff’s Road Patrol conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the suspects.

After obtaining a search warrant, the officers searched the residence and located items used for manufacturing methamphetamine, hazardous material and items associated with drug use.

Officers also located a zip-lock bag containing approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine. A hazardous materials cleanup was required for some items located.

Both suspects were lodged at the Berrien County Jail.

The additional occupants located at the residence were questioned and released.

The Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for possible additional charges.
