Roundup: Area wrestling teams kick off season

Second-year Dowagiac wrestling coach Colin Burandt was pleased with his team’s performance in its season opener Wednesday.

The Chieftains hosted a quadrangular with Buchanan, Berrien Springs and Edwardsburg.

Dowagiac went 2-0 on the night defeating Buchanan 46-25 and Berrien Springs 56-24.

Edwardsburg was also 2-0 on the night as it defeated Berrien Springs 61-18 and the Bucks 49-12.

“We wrestled very well,” Burandt said. “Our first match against Buchanan we seemed a bit rusty and had some first match jitters but our second dual we wrestled very well. We still have a lot to work on but I liked what I saw out of the kids.”

The Chieftains (2-0) had plenty of wrestlers win two matches in the season opener, including Justin Lyle and Kody Walker.

“Justin Lyle and Kody Walker performed very well tonight,” Burandt said. “Justin hasn’t wrestled in two years, so for him to come out and wrestle the way he did after such a long absence and Kody bumping up a weight from last year, I was very impressed.”

Buchanan coach Andy Riggs, who is replacing the late Frank Mucha, said his team has its eye on the postseason.

“We wrestled well,” he said. “We have things to work on, but what the guys did they did right. They tried hard when they were on the mat. I was glad to see our JV kids wrestle well against their opponents.

“We will continue to improve and work towards February. Jacob Graham and Max Carrigan went 2-0 on the night. Dakota Cowan, Stone Fox, Alex Becvar, and Adam Eger went 1-1 on the night. The good news is we will improve.”

Another first year coach, Jesse Becraft of Edwardsburg, was also happy about the performance of his squad.

“I was very pleased with our overall performance,” he said. “I thought our kids competed very well. Of course we still have a long ways to go until we are where we need to be by the end of the year, but it was a very good start.

“We had a lot of freshmen that had to get their nerves under control. Our upperclassmen did what they should and took care of business. Two kids that really stood out to me were Nick Bradley, coming off a couple of injury filled years getting back to wrestling like he is capable, and Derek Hess starting as a freshmen two weight classes above his normal weight and delivering outstanding performances.”

Dowagiac is headed to the Vicksburg Invitational Saturday, while Edwardsburg (2-0) will compete in the Southwest Michigan Classic at Allegan.

Buchanan (0-2) will compete in the Kelloggsville Invitational Saturday.
