Buchanan’s Strefling first team Class B All-State

Buchanan senior Franki Strefling, who helped lead the Bucks to a school record 49 victories and a spot in the Class B state semifinals, was recently named first team all-state by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association.

Buchanan, which was defeated in five sets by eventual state champion North Branch, also had four other players named all-state.

Alex Tobler, a senior, was named second team all-state, while senior Liz Kuntz was a third team selection.

Seniors Britta Mollberg and Taylor Strauss were named to the honorable mention portion of the squad.

Niles junior Bella Rasler was a third team selection in Class A.

Rasler helped Niles set a new school record for wins with 48.

Niles’ Nola Wallace and Madison Cavanaugh were both MIVCA Academic All-State picks.

Strefling, who has committed to play volleyball at Eastern Michigan University next year, is a two-time first team all-state selection. Strefling was an honorable mention pick in 2014.

She finished with 518 kills 288 digs, 45 blocks and 30 aces. She holds the career and single season Buchanan records for kills and hitting percentage.

Tobler finished with 671 kills, 75 aces, 452 digs and 28 blocks, while Kuntz had 400 kills, 166 blocks, 22 aces and 72 digs.

Mollberg had 1,600 assists, 446 digs, 122 kills and 57 aces. She is the single season and career record holder for assists.

Strauss had 556 digs and 33 aces. She holds the school record for single season and career digs.

Over their four-year career, these five seniors, along with Taylor Reed and Andrea Bair, helped Buchanan fashion a 177-29 record with three district championships and a regional title.

Rasler, an outside hitter, finished the season with 599 kills, 427 digs, 68 blocks and 56 aces.

Rasler was also named All-SMAC West Division, as well as all-region in Class A.
