Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Jose Carrillo

Jose Carrillo is a freshman on the Dowagiac soccer team.
What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?
JC: Taking leadership.
What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?
JC: I have none, because I think everything you do wrong is just a lesson learned.
What has been a hardship in your life?
JC: Not being able to do things.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
JC: My dad, because he helps me a lot, teaching me right from wrong.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
JC: Getting beat badly in soccer.
How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?
JC: I run at home when I have free time and lift some weights.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
JC: Cross country.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
JC: They help you with your character and make you have a responsibility.
How would you give away $50,000?
JC: I would give it to the people that need help financially or to the soccer program.
If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?
JC: Real Madrid.
If I did not play sports, I would…?
JC: Try and find something to do, because sports keep me busy.
What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?
JC: Making the right choices.
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
JC: That if you get a red card, you do not have to sit out for a game.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
JC: That I am a good player and can play any position basically.
What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?
JC: Not quitting anything I thought I could not do, and yes I am glad I did it.
What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?
JC: A Latino getting into Harvard University. It let me know anyone can accomplish anything.
What is your favorite hobby? Why?
JC: Soccer, because it has helped me mature, take responsibility and take leadership.
