Broncos win MAC West Division championship

KALAMAZOO — It was a record-setting evening for the Western Michigan Broncos on their way to the Mid-American Conference West Division championship Friday night.

Not only did the No. 21-ranked Broncos (12-0) beat Toledo 55-35 for the division title, but senior wide receiver Corey Davis became the first player in FBS history to have more than 300 receptions, 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a career.

Western Michigan also set a new single-season attendance record in the process.

With the victory, the Broncos cap their first-even undefeated regular season and will now face Ohio University (8-4) in the MAC championship game at Ford Field Friday night.

“The hardest thing is, as a head coach, that moment (of euphoria Friday night of going 12-0 and winning the MAC West) is over,” Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck said. “And as I sit here today, I’m already on to, ‘OK, where do we have to get better? How can I push our staff to be better tomorrow? How can we give our players the best advantage for next week?’ because we play a very, very tough team in Ohio University.”

Davis, from Wheaton, Illinois, surpasses Trevor Insley, who had 5,005 yards while playing for Nevada from 1996-1999.

Davis finished the game with eight receptions for 82 yards, giving him 5,069 yards in his career, which will feature two more games — the MAC championship game and a bowl game.

He also caught his 50th career touchdown pass, which is a WMU record.

“I’m not sure which catch,” Davis said. “They announced it after we had scored on one of those drives. I was pretty emotional, but I tried to keep it together, because we had an entire game to finish.”

It did not take long for the Broncos to get on the scoreboard as Asantay Brown picked off a pass on the first of the game and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.

The lead was short-lived as Toledo took the ensuing kickoff and quickly made its way into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.

Behind the running of Kareem Hunt, who finished with 200 yards and a touchdown, the Rockets (9-3) kept it close for a half.

Leading 24-14 at the break, the Broncos tightened up the defense and fired up the offense to outscore Toledo 31-21 in the final 30 minutes.

Zach Terrell was 19-of-25 for 196 yards and three touchdowns, while Jamauri Bogan rushed for 198 yards and a score.

And while the Broncos prepare for the championship game and a possible New Year’s Six bowl game, it must also deal with the continuing media surge around Fleck, whose name has come up several times this season as the possible candidate for several coaching positions.

A text message from WMU Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard Saturday night to the media said that Fleck has not spoken with other schools about coaching jobs. She added he will not do so until after the title game.

The Broncos and Bobcats will tee it up at 7 p.m. at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday.

The game can be seen live on ESPN2.
