UPDATE: Niles man dies after catching fire

A man was taken to Memorial Hospital Tuesday night after catching fire at Birchcrest Estates in Niles Township.

According to a release from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, officers were dispatched to the mobile home park located at 2330 E. Main St. at 8:19 p.m., where they found the male subject lying on the ground covered in smoke.

The subject, whose name is not being released at this time, was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by SMCAS Ambulance, who also responded to the scene.

2:14 p.m.

The man who was found smoldering early last night in Niles Township has died.

Deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department have identified the victim as a 49-year-old Niles man, but are not releasing his name as of yet.

After being taken by SMCAS Ambulance to Memorial Hospital, he was airlifted to Cook County Hospital in Illinois where he was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.
