Dowagiac’s Williams first team all-state

Dowagiac junior Gage Williams has been named to the Division 3 Michigan High School Coaches Association All-State team.

Williams, who was an honorable mention selection in 2015, finished the season with 14 goal, and seven assists.

He missed eight matches after suffering an MCL sprain in the Chieftains football season opener against Vicksburg.

“He scored or assisted on a goal in every game he played this year,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “His defensive play against Paw Paw pushed him to the top of our district.”

Williams and the other all-state players will be honored at the MIHSSCA All-State Banquet at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Lansing Saturday.

Williams, who was a All-Wolverine Conference selection, was also named all-district and all-region.

Antonio Brito, Mariano Brito, Gavin Green, A.J. Lara and Edgar Bravo were all named to the Division 3 All-District team. Williams was the lone Dowagiac player on the all-regional squad.

Antonio Brito, Green, Nick Foote and Lara were all selected for the All-Wolverine Conference team.

Niles senior Ben Florkowski was a second team selection in Division 2.

Florkowski scored 23 goals and had seven assists for the Vikings.

Florkowski was also named all-district and all-regional.

“Ben had an excellent senior season,” first-year Niles coach Ryan Haines said. “Well deserved of his recognition on the second team all state squad. Having coached him before I had an idea of where to put him in the squad so that he could be successful both individually and with his teammates.

“His ability to play multiple positions throughout the season allowed for the younger players to see and understand the tactics the coaching staff instilled. He always coached his teammates on the field during practice and games. A captain in his senior season that was looking for that elusive District Championship, unfortunately we ended just short. An immense talent that we will undoubtedly miss next season on the pitch.”

He was also named All-SMAC West Division, along with Alex Jasper.

Bryant Echeverria, Mitchel Park and Jose Magana were all All-SMAC honorable mention picks.

Edwardsburg’s Isaac Toms was an honorable mention selection in Division 2.

Cassopolis’ Kiambu Gary was an honorable mention pick in Division 4.
