Buchanan faces North Branch in Class B semifinals

HUDSONVILLE — The No. 5-ranked Buchanan Bucks made history in its Class B state quarterfinal victory over No. 9-ranked Grant Tuesday night.

The Bucks (49-6) set a new school record for victories with the 26-24, 25-14 and 25-17 win over Grant.

Buchanan advances to the Class B state semifinals where it will face No. 3-ranked North Branch at the Kellogg Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Bucks last trip to the semifinals came in 1991 when Buchanan was a Class C team.

The Bucks defeated Elkton-Pigeon Bay 15-11 and 15-9 to reach the finals where they were defeated by Hanover-Horton 15-4 and 15-2.

North Branch, the defending state runner-up, defeated St. Claire Shores South Lake 25-4, 25-15 and 15-10 to advance the semifinals.

Top-ranked Lake Odessa Lakewood defeated Adrian in straight sets, while No. 7-ranked Cadillac defeated Corunna 3-1 to also reach the Class B Final Four.

Lake Odessa and Cadillac will play the second semifinal at approximately 7:15 p.m.

The Class B championship match is schedule for 4 p.m. at the Kellogg Arena.

Buchanan was led by all-stater Franki Strefling, who had 20 kills, 14 digs, four blocks and an ace.

The Bucks also got nine kills, 18 digs and five aces from Alex Tobler and eight kills, five blocks and two digs from Liz Kuntz.

Megan Adkerson also had a big night with five kills, two blocks and two digs, while Britta Mollberg finished with 42 assists, eight digs and an ace. Taylor Strauss had 17 digs.
