LANSING — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced this week that former state Rep. Matt Lori will serve as acting senior deputy director of the policy, planning, and legislative services administration for MDHHS effective Monday.

“Matt is a dedicated and highly respected public servant whose career has been committed to protecting the health and safety of Michigan residents,” said Nick Lyon, director of MDHHS. “I am confident that his leadership and vision will keep Michigan a national leader in health innovation, improving outcomes for Michigan residents for years to come.”

Lori has more than 35 years of experience in public service.

Prior to his work with MDHHS, he was elected three times to serve as the representative of the 59th District in the Michigan House of Representatives. Lori’s career also includes 29 years in law enforcement, having served 20 years as the sheriff for St. Joseph County.

As acting senior deputy director of the policy, planning, and legislative services administration, Lori will oversee Michigan rehabilitation services, health policy and innovation, legislative and constituent services and the office of planning, which include the pathways to potential program and certificate of need. Lori will help guide MDHHS priority areas and work closely with our legislative partners to best serve the needs of Michigan residents.

Prior to his new position, Lori served as the MDHHS health care administrator helping to improve and innovate Michigan’s health care delivery systems.

Lori is taking over for Elizabeth Hertel who recently left the department to accept a new position with Trinity Health.

A graduate of Western Michigan University with a degree in Public Administration, Lori currently resides in Constantine, Michigan, with his wife, Linda.
