Rescue workers responded to a person injury accident on US-31 Sunday near Niles-Buchanan Road that caused the high-trafficked roadway to shut down.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2005 Dodge Stratus was travelling south, possibly having a mechanical problem, which caused it to straddle the right fog line.

Meanwhile, a 1997 Acura was also traveling south when it ran into the rear of the Dodge.

The Niles Township Fire Department used the jaws of life to free two passengers from the rear of the Dodge. The highway was closed for approximately one hour.  Vehicles were detoured at exit 5 south.  The driver of the Dodge resides in Kentucky and the driver of the Acura is from Indiana.

The accident remains under investigation.
