A single female driver was reported to have crashed her PT Cruiser into a utility pole as she traveled west on Main Street on Sunday.
The crash lodged the car just above ground in front of the Halbritter Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St.
Niles Police Chief Jim Millin said the driver was taken to the emergency room at Lakeland Hospital, where she was treated with minor injuries before being released.
Millin said that there was no indication that the woman had been speeding. Several witnesses said allegedly the woman had been swerving erratically before she crashed. At this time, Millin said authorities are investigating whether drugs were involved in the accident.
Other witnesses reported to hearing the car’s wheels leaving the ground as the vehicle collided with the utility pole. The force of the accident left the utility pole bent over and the front end of the vehicle resting off of the ground.
No other people were injured in the crash, Millin said.
Two officers from the Niles City Police responded to the crash, in addition to a SMCAS ambulance, the fire department and Niles utilities.
Millin said the accident damaged up to five utility poles and it is unclear at this time if the force from the woman hitting a single pole caused the pole to knock into other poles or if she also hit those poles, in the wake of the accident.
The power may have been out temporarily, Millin said due to the utility department trying to fix the poles.
