Sister Lakes Elementary hosted its annual parent resource fair for local migrant families last week, with a total of 26 families, including 37 adults and 60 children from all the district’s schools, attending the event.

Also present were volunteers with the Sister Lakes Fire Department, who handed out free smoke alarms and talked to families about fire safety and representatives with the Dowagiac Public Library, who signed up families for free library cards and shared the services the library offers. The Everything Educational company also had representatives at the event, with displays for children to play math-based games.

Children also built homework stations with their parent to take home so they can complete their homework in an organized manner. This was a box cutout personalized to their liking, with folders and an area to write in assignments or tasks to be completed.

Food was also provided by a local supermarket with tacos, beans and rice served.

Parents were also asked to complete a short survey to make sure Dowagiac educators are meeting their needs and to seek input about future services that could be made available to them.
