Never take your right to vote for granted

Earlier this year, I stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance for the first time and took the steps to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.
It has been a long road for my husband and me, more than 10 years since I first moved to this country, but we both felt that the time was right.
For the first time in my life, I will be able to vote in a U.S. election and be part of the democratic process that this country, now my country, prides itself for.
Originally, I’m from South Africa, and the first election I ever voted in was the historic 1994 general election that marked the first free and fair elections in that country. I will never take for granted the right to vote. I will also never take for granted those who sacrifice their time and money to run for public office.
My husband, Jason Gatties, is running for La Grange Township Trustee in Cass County. I am proud to support him and all those who truly seek to serve the constituents who they wish to represent. When you go to the polling stations this Nov. 8, remember the great responsibility you have to take part in this process, evaluate your choices wisely, and exercise your right.
