Man killed after shooting at police

A man who opened fire on police officers was killed in a shooting just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety.

A statement released by the department reports that officers were dispatched to an unknown address in the 900 block of Pavone in Benton Harbor at approximately 2:17 a.m. after someone reported a male suspect was being held at gunpoint by another male.

Police say the caller described the house the incident was occurring in as having a certain type of vehicle. Officers arrived in the area, made contact with a house that fit the general description and made contact with the occupants of the residence.

According to the report, officers were advised nobody from the residence called the police. The officers were admitted entry into the home and, finding no signs of trouble, began to leave the residence.

As the officers were exiting the house, the release states that an unknown subject emerged from the street and fired several shots at the officers.

Police say as officers ran for cover, one officer returned fire and hit the shooter.

Officers found the suspect in possession of two handguns. He was taken to Lakeland Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

The subject will undergo an autopsy at 8:30 a.m. in Grand Rapids.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation, which will be conducted by the Michigan State Police, according to the release.

No officers were injured in the incident.
