What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners that want to make Niles their lifelong home.

Monday, Sept. 12

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Twisted Stiches

People can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on their own yarn or sewing project. Rookies are welcome; a teacher and a few loaner tools will help you get started.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 13

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Anyone can join the library staff each Tuesday for a special storytime tour of the world. Each week, staff will have books, songs, a craft, and other super surprises relating to the special country of the month. Don’t forget to stamp your passport.

• 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Physicians Seminar with Dr. Sohn

• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

Chips and Chapters is a read-aloud storytime. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while guests eat chips and follow along.

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

Pajama storytime offers a fun evening of three stories, music and movement and a craft. Guests should feel free to wear their jammies and bring their family.

• 6:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

Fiction for Foodies is a potluck book club. Books are available at the Information Desk. This month the group will discuss “The Small Woman” by Alan Burgess.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 14

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3-5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 10 a.m. to noon — Making Change

Making Change is a free six-session class that prepares participants to make informed financial decisions. This component of Changing the Balance is designed for individuals who realize a solid grounding in the basics of personal finance is critical for ongoing success.

Topics covered are: Creating spending plans, using financial services, homeownership and borrowing, earning power and insurance, savings and investing, and solving consumer problems. Registration and regular attendance is required.

 

Thursday, Sept. 15

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play.

Other board games are also available.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teen Time is a special time set aside just for teens, in which participants choose their own activity. The library has video games, crafts, movies and snacks.

 

Saturday, Sept. 17

• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess Club

Love to play chess? This group meets twice monthly to play on the first and third Saturdays. The library welcomes all ages and abilities. Novice chess players are welcome and teachers will be on hand.

• 10:30-11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the Library

Everyone is welcome to take the time to do something great for themselves while reaping the health and relaxation benefits of yoga. Saturdays in September there will be free yoga at the library. This class is for all abilities, so those who have never tried yoga are welcome as well. Participants should bring a yoga mat and some water. A limited number of mats are available to borrow for those who do not have their own.
