Ramona Roller Rink seeking stolen decoration

One of Sister Lakes’ most popular destinations is currently seeking one of the pillars of its miniature golf course.

Ramona Roller Rink is asking the public for any information about the whereabouts of its giant totem pole, located at one of the holes of the  golf course in front of the building on CR-690. The decorative item was stolen from the property during the early morning hours Thursday, said Ramona owner Harold Schaus.

Schaus was informed of the theft by Becky Durczak, co-owner of Captain Jack’s restaurant across the street, he said. Durczak said that one of the security cameras installed outside the restaurant captured footage of what appeared to be three teenage boys carrying the pole down CR-690 at 2:17 a.m.

“At first they thought it was a piece of wood from a nearby dock, but then as they were trying to figure out where it came from they realized it was one of our decorations,” Schaus said.

On top of the totem pole, Durczak believes the teens stole a handicap parking sign from Captain Jack’s parking, though an unknown individual returned the sign later in the week, she said.

The totem pole, which stands about 10 feet tall, served as an obstacle on one of the holes at the roller rink’s outdoor miniature golf course, which has been open the past four years.

“It was one of the hottest things at the course,” he said. “People would always stop and get their picture taken next to it.”

The pole was part of the original miniature golf course located on the grounds during the 1960s, having been purchased and restored by Schaus to use in the new golf course.

“You just cannot buy these kinds of things anymore,” he said.

An item that easily stands out, Schaus is hopeful that the property will eventually be discovered and returned to the business, he said.

Anyone with information about the pole or the people who stole it is encouraged to contact the Van Buren County Sherriff’s Department (269) 657-3101.
