What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners that want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any library programs and all programs are free. Canned Food Drive

The library is kicking off the back to school season with a canned food drive. The Salvation Army is dealing with a shortage of food in its food pantry. Those who donate five or more (non-expired) cans to their favorite department in the library will receive some goodies in return. The drive ends Sept. 10th. Prizes include:

Circulation: Food for fines (50 cents per can)

Children’s: Treasure chest prize

Information: $1 book sale gift certificate

Computer Lab: 30 additional minutes on computer

• Administration: Vintage library postcard (circa 1980)

 

Monday, Sept. 5 — Library closed for Labor Day

 

Tuesday, Sept. 6

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Each Tuesday the library hosts a special storytime tour of the world. Each week, staff will have books, songs, a craft and other super surprises relating to the special country of the month…and don’t forget to stamp your passport.

• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

Chips and Chapters is a fun, read-aloud storytime for all ages. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while guests eat chips and follow along.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Free Play

Lego lovers are invited to stop by Youth Services on the first and third Tuesday of each month to create a masterpiece.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Tim Talk

Those who know him say Tim Smith is known for providing a fun, educational and interesting night for anyone who attends. So, be sure to come on down and learn something new. This month’s talk will be on Truman Capote.

• 7 p.m. — Niles Art Association presents Potter Peter Fauver

Potter Peter Fauver will be discussing his work at the Niles Art Association meeting in the Rotunda of the Niles District Library. Everyone is welcome to join the presentation.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 7

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) meet at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3-5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

 

Thursday, Sept. 8

• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

This program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened, or just for referrals and information. Representatives will now be here at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday, For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.

• 10:30 a.m. — Special Edition Movie Day

Special Edition is a series of programs designed to be particularly accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs. Anyone is welcome to attend. This week we’ll be watching “The Angry Birds Movie.”

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play. Other board games are also available.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teen Time is a special time set aside just for teens. Participants can choose to play video games, make crafts, watch movies, simply hang out and eat snacks.

 

Friday, Sept. 9

• 1 and 4:30 p.m. — Tween Book Club

Youth ages 8 to 12 are invited to join for snacks, conversation and a book discussion on the second Friday of each month. Stop by the Youth Services Desk for a copy of our latest book. This month, we’ll be reading “Absolutely Almost” by Lisa Graff.

 

Saturday, Sept. 10

• 10:30-11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the Library

Everyone is invited to take the time to do something great for themselves while reaping the health and relaxation benefits of yoga. The library offers free yoga on Saturdays in September. This class is for all abilities and organizers say it is the perfect time for novices to learn. Attendees are asked to bring a yoga mat and some water. The library has a limited number of yoga mats on hand that can be borrowed.

• 10:30 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

This musical program is aimed for toddlers, ages infant to 5 to help strengthen the little brain and body muscles. Participants will use music to reinforce hand eye coordination, cross brain exercises and tactile and sensory movements.

• 1 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club

For children ages 6 to 12, Jr. Garden Club meets the second Saturday of every month at 1 p.m. Initial registration is required. Call (269) 683-8545 ext. 106 to sign up. Organizers say September will be “applelicious”

• 1 to 8 p.m. — Game Day for Adults and Adventuring After Hours

Those 18 or older who like video games or board games can join the library for Game Day for Adults from 1 to 5 p.m. The library has board games, cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U games set up and ready for all to play. People are welcome to bring their own as well. Then, all are invited to join the library for Adventuring Afterhours, when library staff shuts off the electronics and delve into some adventure board games.
