An Edwardsburg man, who was reported missing to the Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department was found dead in a truck in a parking lot on Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo Aug. 23.

Stephen Max Heuer, 32, of Edwardsburg, was discovered in a vehicle at approximately 10:32 a.m. by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers on the northeast corner of Stadium Drive and Drake Road.

Officers were sent to the scene in response to a report of a person being unresponsive.

The found Heuer slumped over and dead in the front seat of his red Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.

According to police, no signs of foul play were immediately apparent and an autopsy was scheduled to be performed to determine cause of death. They also noted that he had apparently been there for a long period of time.

According to Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Chief Tim Kozal, his department was contacted about Heuer being missing.

“It was one of those situations when you have an adult and they have gone missing it is considered a voluntary missing,” Kozal said. “It is different when you have a juvenile or a person who has made suicidal statements or threating statements. He had just not been seen for a couple of days.”

The family contacted the Ontwa-Edwardsburg department and Kozal put out an alert throughout southwest Michigan to be on the lookout for Heuer.

“We had it out there and I got a call once they found the vehicle,” Kozal said.

Heuer is originally from Battle Creek and graduated from Pennfield High School.
