Dowagiac police are seeking the whereabouts of a man suspected of robbing a city gas station at gunpoint Monday night, according to a release from the department.

According to department officials, officers were dispatched to the Marathon gas station, located at 801 Spruce St., at around 10:41 p.m. after being notified the station had just been robbed. Dowagiac police spoke with an employee at the station as well as a customer in the store at the time of the incident.

The witnesses told the police that a man had entered the store and pulled out a handgun, demanding that the employee hand over money from the cash register. The suspect then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and stole a wallet from the customer inside the station before fleeing from the building on foot, heading east.

Dowagiac requested the assistance of a K-9 unit with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office to try and track down the suspect, but the search was unsuccessful.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Police describe the suspect as a 6 foot 1 black man, weighing approximately 200 pounds, of an unknown age. He was wearing a long sleeved gray shirt, black jeans with a design/logo on the right rear pocket and grey shoes, as well as a black covering on his face and black gloves.

The case remains under investigation. People with information about the suspect are asked to call the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743, or the Cass County Tip Line at (800) 462-9328.
