Dowagiac, Niles compete in Harvest Invitational today

Dowagiac and Niles will join 13 other teams at the Paw Paw Harvest Invitational today.

The Chieftains and Vikings will compete against Allegan, Coloma, Delton-Kellogg, Fennville, Kalamazoo Central, Kalamazoo Christian, Kalamazoo Cougars, Lakeshore, Lawrence, Lawton, Mattawan, Otsego and the host Redskins.

The middle school race will get things under way at 4:30 p.m. with the boys varsity race to follow at 5 p.m. on the David Edward Lean Memorial Course. The girls race will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the JV race to wrap things up beginning at 6 p.m.

The course is located at the Paw Paw Middle School located on West Michigan Avenue and starts near the tennis courts.

Portage Central won the boys championship last year, while Otsego was second and Mattawan third. Niles finished eighth and Dowagiac ninth.

Devin Tomlison and Kendall Jeremiah led the Vikings last year as they finished 25th and 30th respectively.

Alex Standiford of Mattawan set the course record in 2010 with a time of 15:46.

Otsego won the girls championship with Portage Central taking second and Mattawan finishing third.

Niles was fourth as Taylor Altergott placed 16th overall.

The Chieftains were 10th. Emily Dodd led Dowagiac with a 41st place finish.

Kayla DePierre of Paw Paw is the course record holder with a time of 19:29, which was set in 2012.
